  • SBA Urges Disaster Survivors to Beware of Recovery Scams

Posted By Carlos Rafael Cruz On Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 , No Comments »

The U.S. Small Business Administration is urging disaster victims seeking federal aid to be alert to scam artists posing as federal officials and to be cautious about any solicitations for fees to perform services that are available from federal agency staff for free.

In the wake of widespread flooding, wildfires and tornados in many areas across the country over the past few months, the SBA is particularly concerned about flyers that have appeared in tornado-damaged areas asking for non-refundable fees of up to $450 to help disaster victims fill out their loan applications and as much as $1,000 to verify losses and file loan applications.

Federal agencies involved in disaster recovery will never ask for a fee or payment to file an application for financial assistance or to inspect damaged property.

“Historically, natural disasters bring out the very best in people, and there are countless stories of the selfless acts of helpful neighbors and volunteers,” said SBA Administrator Karen Mills.

“Unfortunately, we have also seen in the past individuals who attempt to take advantage of people who need assistance. Disaster survivors should be vigilant in protecting their personal assets, particularly in the stressful environment of a disaster recovery.

“The SBA will not tolerate the defrauding of those who have already lost so much in the aftermath of these devastating disasters,” Mills said. “Those who are found taking advantage of disaster victims will be prosecuted to the fullest extent provided by law.”

If you suspect a person is posing as a local or federal agent, or encounter what you believe are fraudulent activities connected with disaster relief operations, contact your local law enforcement officials, phone the toll-free National Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721, or send an email to disaster@leo.gov. The phone line is staffed by a live operator 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To register for federal help after a disaster declaration, visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or call FEMA at 800-621-3362 (800-426-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired).

Disaster survivors may also visit one of the local recovery centers to get help with filing for assistance. To get help with the disaster loan application, contact the SBA by email at disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or by calling 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for those with speech or hearing disabilities). Those affected by recent disasters may also file a loan application online by visiting SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/

The SBA makes low-interest, taxpayer-backed disaster loans to homeowners, renters, businesses and non-profit organizations of all sizes. More information about the disaster assistance program is available at www.sba.gov/disasterassistance.

Get Yourself Blogging with 5 Simple Tips

Posted By Carlos Rafael Cruz On Saturday, April 30th, 2011 , No Comments »

So you have an account with WordPress and thought of that catchy blog name that everyone would just love to talk about. But the only problem seems that your Blog has NO readers, probably because it is devoid of any content. Your blog looks like one of those nice looking suites at the clothing store with a mannequin holding it up. Your blog site looks nice but it doesn’t do anything for your potential audience. You put your head down in shame when you hear others talk about their blogging and what they’ve read on other’s blogs.

It is important that you properly maintain a blog in today’s society. I blog the right step is a step in a social media world. If you don’t have one, that is OK as well. You are running your business using different techniques. But if you have a live blog and you are not doing anything with it, I believe you are, in the long run, hurting yourself more professionally than if you didn’t have one at all.

It is a time management thing, I know, you don’t have the time. Which we all know is certified B.S. Because we see you BS’n when you say you are working or “getting things done.” Just a side note, my experience in coaching my clients, I’ve discovered people who put things off do not see a value in it. Once you discover the value with blogging, you will begin to do it over and over again. Knowing what kind of results to expect. But you can’t get results from doing nothing or complaining about it in the back of your mind. You can pray to what ever porcelain god(s) you believe in, only you will get yourself to start blogging. Besides, they have their own blog and they are pretty busy right now writing their next posting. Shouldn’t you be as well!?

Let me ask you, as your Coach, what value can blogging bring to your business? Who can you reach by blogging? Do you believe, with blogging, you can maintain a certain relationship level with your current and past clients. Do you believe you can use blogging to attract new clients? If you answered these questions positively, then you should be blogging. It is not hard to blog, it is harder to find a reason to blog than it is to blog.

I would like to share with you five simple tips you can use to get yourself to start blogging. And to continue to start blogging each and every day.

    Get Into Live Blogging
How many times have you found yourself at Starbucks? By-the-way, how many times did you visit Starbucks today? How many blog postings do you think you could have written. Even if was just something under 300 words. Think about that. Don’t be afraid to pull out the laptop and start keying out something that will provide some sort of value to your audience.
    Live Blogging: Mobile Edition
You do realize that you can use your phone to create blog entries. Yes, there is an App for that. Am I supposed to put ® after that comment? Time to talk to my legal time. Code named Majik-8-ball. If you are able to text while you walk and drink your latte, then you can pump out something of value at the cost of 300 words or less.
    Tell Your Story Through Pictures
You don’t have to always use words to tell your story. Do a home-land-security move, if you see something of value, report it. Take a photo with your phone and post it to your blog. There are many websites you can use to upload photos to and add a description or micro-blog about the photo.
Spread the Word About Someone Else
Always keep in mind, business blogging is more about your audience than about you. Always keep an eye out for anyone who may be of interest to your audience. You know your audience better than anyone else. They should share a little bit of your personality as well. So more than likely, if you like it, they should as well.

Remember, blogging shouldn’t be treated like a 9-5 job. Don’t turn off your mind after 5 o’clock whistle blows. Blogging can happen anytime of the day. When inspiration comes, you need to be ready to get your message out to the masses. It won’t wait till the next morning. More than likely. If you are doing nothing after 5 and become inspired, that is the best time that you will probably get more of a response from your audience. Because they are probably looking for content to consume and share. Feed them, give them something to share. You should get into the habit of doing this daily, so pick a time to blog and stick with it.

If you are not sure what to blog about, go visit Google Trends and (http://www.google.com/trends) and Twitter Search (http://search.twitter.com/). There is nothing wrong with talking about what everyone else is talking about, IF you can put your opinion on it. You do it already when you hear something on the radio, TV, or YouTube. And would you believe that PILF was one of the hot topics at the time of this writing. I’ll give you a hint, it had to deal with the royal wedding, and there is a 50/50 change that you’ll get it wrong. Look it up.

Make sure you are providing high quality content. That is always going to make the different between success and failure in blogging. Start with sharing things that really mean something to YOU. If you already have an audience, listen to your audience and pick a topic that you can easily connect with. If you are beginner, writing a good post takes time and patience. But don’t ever give up. Blogging is just one more tool you can use to get face-to-face with a potential client. It will take time, patience and consistency. Do it write and you’ll start to see your following grow.
