You can achieve anything you want; IF you put your mind to it and your heart behind it. The tricky part is choosing a goal that will allow you to accomplish your tasks within a reasonable time. The goal you seek to achieve should allow you to accomplish your tasks without disrupting or offsetting your life too dramatically.

    Wake Up and Move Forward

Can you tell me where you will be ten years from today. More than likely, with a certitude of 99.99%, the answer is no. I’ll leave a .01% for anything that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected. We will call this .01% the exception to the rule. I’m sure you can assert an interesting and convincing argument of where you would like to be in ten years. But if you examine the phrases, you will see a big difference between “will be” and “like to be”.

Can you tell me where you were in your life ten years ago? More than likely, with a certitude of 99.99%, the answer is yes. I am sure there will be little arguing where you were in your life all those years ago. You can probably recount the events and include all the relevant characteristics, and qualities identifying each highlight. All this with clarity, color and total confidence. Imagine that, with total clarity and confidence. Don’t you wish you can describe your future with that much accuracy and ease. I’m not at this point in time going to say whether it is or isn’t.

    Reflection in the Mirror

In the blink of an eye, years can pass by. And it isn’t until you have that abrupt moment realizing how much time has passed. Do you see the same person when you look back? Hopefully you don’t see the same person today as you did ten years ago. If you feel that you do, how does that make you feel? Who cares, the real question is what are you going to do about it! Do you want to be the same person five years from now! Or do you want to be someone who succeeds and inspires.

As you have observed, I have dispensed more questions than I have bestowed my opinions. But in order to elicit and obtain some information to exploit or make use of, the asking of these questions, and more, are very important. In order for you to be conscious enough for the right change, you need to ask not just any question, but the right questions. And asking these questions is more of an art form. By asking yourself the correct questions, you will have a greater chance of getting an answer which will allow you to make a difference. You are asking a question for a purpose. The purpose could be to discover what progress you are making, or what your successes or failures are.

And you have to be very careful of the questions you ask. Ask the question with an imprecise method, and you can do more harm than good. As I said, asking questions is a form of art a type of science. For example, if you had to describe yourself to someone in a letter, which one of these questions would help you to describe yourself better, Who am I or What do I stand for. If you are trying to manage your time better, which question would elicit the most effective or desirable answer from yourself: What will I do with my time or What matter the most to me at this point in time. Questioning is an art, so start learning how to ask the right questions.

    Painting Your Canvas

Today, right here, right now, how do you envision yourself? What do you imagine are your future possibilities? What is the perception of yourself at point zero, today. Do you see yourself in a position or a time in your life where you want to be. Has life become so easy for you that you don’t need to move forward. Have you become so comfortable with the way things have been all you do is just fantasize or hallucinate about moving forward. Or have you created anchors in your life which prevent you from moving forward. Living an easy and comfortable life prevents you from creating an end goal for yourself and allows your surrounding environment to create and end goal for you. And anchors are distractions in life which prevent you from seeing an end goal and moving forward.

You can’t live life on your own terms if you refuse to grow, if you refuse to move. It is also very easy to get caught up in our lives and often with the anchors, difficulties, dilemmas and confusions. This only makes it seem more impossible to know what to do or how to advance with your life. Have you asked yourself what holds you back? Have you asked yourself what you are afraid of? Sometimes you’ll look at your past and you will think you are seeing your future. That needs to stop. If you look at your past, for any reason, it should be to measure how far you have come. To learn from any successes or mistakes you have made and to build upon them.

Learning, as well as living is continual. It will never end, and it never should end. You should always work on evaluating yourself either every so often or after a major event in your life. During this time you don’t have to do any deep Socratic thinking. All you have to do is see where you are, where you were and the path that got you to this point. That is it, three simple steps, find two points in your life and analyze the path taken. It shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours to really go over this stage of your life. The reason why it may take a couple of hour is because this will give you time not only to reflect on the past but to prepare or make any adjustments for the future.

    Meaning and Understanding

The solutions to your problems or dilemmas are always in front of you. The answers were never purposely hidden from you. The cunningness of this skillful act is knowing how to correctly word your questions in order to find the solution to help you move forward. To help you take further charge of your life. I’m not going to tell you “to” take charge of your life. Because you are already in charge of your life. You are always in charge of your life. Whether or not you just chose to either do nothing with it or consent to someone else to take charge of your life. You chose to stay the same because you may think there is some external force which prevents you from doing what you want to truly be. You chose to stay the same because of your fear. You chose to stay the same because it is easy. You cannot fail if you do not try, nor can you succeed in obtaining success.

Dealing with Issues using the 5 W’s

Posted By Carlos Rafael Cruz On Friday, July 13th, 2007 , No Comments »

In Life, there are three types of issues we tackle on a daily occurrence. These types of issues are the external community issue, the unique personal issue and the internal psychological issue. But before we can talk about how to deal with these issues using the 5 Ws, we need to have a better understanding of what these issues are and how they affect us.

    The Issues

A community issue can be defined as a social topic or problem which is open for debate or discussion. These community issues are either within our control, whether actual or perceived, some examples being illegal immigration reform, taxes, health care, or social security. Or they fall under as being beyond our control, whether actual or perceived. Some examples would be global warming, gas prices, an asteroid strike or even rush hour traffic.

The other issue, which we will not concentrate on here, is the internal psychological issue. This is usually related to some sort of physical or emotional abuse or trauma which is either self-inflicted or inflicted by an external force. Whether actual or perceived, if you feel you have an internal issue which you are unable to handle, you need to seek out a licensed professional who is specialized in helping people find ways to resolve these issues.

The type of issue we are concerned with are personal issues. These issues are defined as a personal problem or difficulty. Not necessary an internal problem. An internal issue more than likely is within our subconsciousness where a personal issue is more conscious. We are somewhat or fully aware of the personal issue at hand. Whether or not we want to deal with it or recognize it, that is a separate discussion. I see the personal issue being the result of your internal and external issues conflicting with each other which in turn makes it a unique issue.

    The Four Factors

It doesn’t matter which type of issue you are dealing with, there will always be four factors which will dictate the intensity of the issue. These factors are your perception, the actual reality, the surrounding circumstances and your reaction. And believe it or not, it is your reaction which will always determine the outcome of any issue. It doesn’t matter if these issues at hand are within or beyond your control.

If you allow, issues can get control of your life. Issues can cause you to feel depressed, isolated, stuck with no way out, frustrated, confused or even lost with no end in sight. And, if you continue down that road, these issues can begin to chip away and erode your integrity, make you vulnerable and begin to burden you and those closest to you. This may also lead to deception and dishonesty of your conduct within your profession. When that happens, you are no longer grounded and it becomes hard to overcome these issues which are now obstacles in your life. And these obstacles will prevent you from moving forward.

If you find the issue is truly beyond your control, don’t worry about it. Whether it is the price of gasoline, the train being delayed, highway traffic, the weather, or even other people’s behavior. These things should automatically be placed in the “not going worried about it” category. Just find a way to deal with it. If gas is to high in your area, try to find another place where it is cheaper, or drive less, find a job closer to home, or take the rail. If you know you are going to be stuck in traffic, listen to talk show on the radio or get a portable media player and fill it up with all the things you want to listen to. You can play music, audiobooks, download previous talk shows and listen to it during your time in traffic. So even if you feel you do not have any control over certain events, you can always work on trying to control the outcome.

If you are in a situation where your issue has influenced your perception, your reality will begin to change to match you perception. But if you are able to, with a positive mindset, disconnect your perception by taking a step back and analyzing the reality. Now you will have a chance to react accordingly to solve your issue. You will be able to find real and relevant solutions to improve and more than likely prevent this from happening again.

    The Five Ws

Now, when we are working with the 5 Ws, we are doing two things. We are doing research and performing action based on our discovery. We do this by taking a step back and applying each of the 5 Ws to the issue. We start with analyzing the first 4 Ws. These are the WHAT of the issue. We ask ourselves WHAT is going on here or what am I feeling. The WHEN of the issue. WHEN did this start. The WHO of the issue. WHO contributed to this issue. The WHERE of the issue. WHERE did this all start.

Once you figure these elements out, you can figure out the WHY of the issue. WHY did this all happen. It is with this discovery we begin to take action on resolving and possibly preventing this issue from recurring again. And to figure out what action to take is the easy part. You already told yourself what action you need to take by properly applying the 5 Ws. The beauty about this process is that anyone at any age can use this process. If you feel you need an outside perspective, then go find someone who can provide positive feedback.

By using this process of stepping back and asking yourself the five W’s, that is the WHAT of the issue, WHAT is going on here. The WHEN of the issue, WHEN did this start. The WHO of the issue, WHO contributed to this issue. The WHERE of the issue, WHERE did this all start. And the WHY of the issue, WHY did this all happen. You would be in total control of your reaction. Your reaction will be calculating, fair, orderly and swift in resolving your issue. There is absolutely no reason for you not to be able to live a happy and successful life.

Life as a Lucid Experience – Finding New Ways to Live Life

Posted By Carlos Rafael Cruz On Thursday, July 12th, 2007 , No Comments »

When you take the first step to approach Life as an experience and not a chore or a task, you can go about fostering the expansion and development of your perception of Life. Living Life is a type of consciousness, it’s a mindset. An analogy to this would be, an Experience is to Life what Articulation is to Speaking. Everyone can speak but not everyone can articulate properly. Everyone has a Life, but not everyone experiences Life. The mindset of Life is you are either living life as a chore or you are living life as an experience. The distinction between the two is they way you visualize your Life. That is all it is, they way you think about it.

If you are interested in experiencing life, rather than asking yourself what do I have to do today, you can ask what do I want to experience. I’ll give a very simple illustration which may sound silly, but when you start to become involved in it, it will become apparent to make more sense and you will start to show more commitment to it in your everyday life.

    Life and the Kitchen

To illustrate this best, we know everyone has to eat, right, Everyone has a kitchen, everyone has a refrigerator, everyone has cupboards and cabinets. And what do they have in them? They have canned foods, dried foods, refrigerated foods and they have drinks and oils and sauces. In other words, they have foods to help sustain them. Sooner or later you will begin to exhaust these necessities and at some point you will have to resupply. When you deplete your supplies, what do you think, the first thing you think is that I need to go shopping, I need to get some more food. Now this is the chore, you are doing something because you feel you have to do it, you have to go shopping to restock your supplies to sustain yourself for the next X amount of days. Now remember I chose food shopping because everyone has to do it and everyone can relate to it. And you can also apply this to anything else you do in your life. Now, how do we go and change a chore into an experience? Well, it can actually be very simple. Rather than thinking in the chore mode, we go ahead and think in the experience mode. It may sound uncomplicated but in reality, subjecting yourself to the motions of change are demanding and punishing for millions of people out there.

The chore method of thinking is I need to go shopping, I need milk, I need eggs, I need stuff for dinner tomorrow. The experience method of thinking is, what new type of food do I want to expose myself to. Do I want to put together something simple or do I want to concoct something unfamiliar and exotic. Do I want to make a simple sandwich or heat up some canned food, or do I want to create a slow roasted chicken dinner. Do I want to eat a bag of Mix Baby Green salad or do I want to satisfy myself with an Organic Mediterranean or Santa Fe Tortilla Salad. Do you notice the difference in rational. Do I shop just to fill my cupboards or do I shop to test my cooking, to experience something fresh and imaginative.

    A New Fresh Market

When you go to the market, go with an open mind and become aware of what appeals to you, what expands your creativeness. If you are the type of person who is not to daring, you can always begin with the foods you are acquainted with and little by little incorporate something different. If you don’t like it, don’t use it again. And you go and go out there and search out something you do like and when you discover what that is, you don’t stop there, you go and experiment with something else. You do not need to transform completely overnight. There are very very few people who can change certain routines or traditions overnight. But as long as you sample something. The principal point to keep in mind is whether you make up your mind to move quickly or you have the intention to move slowly, you are just the same moving. And testing 20 things you don’t like is better than reflecting back, years down the road, wondering what it would have been like.

    It’s Never To Late

So you may want to know, what will this do for me. Well, first, by starting to reshape your mindset from doing a chore to fulfilling an experience, you can embark on developing your personal strengths, you go about to develop talents, both new and old. Changing your way of thinking in this way will also help you to carry on an acceptable path of Lifelong Learning and will work toward the advancement of maintaining a strong mind. An experience is supposed to add quality and value and knowledge to your life. Subsequently you’ll become a person who goes from living day to day repeatedly over and over again, to one who aims toward creating a tomorrow to enjoy.
